If you have ever contacted Apple for support on any of their products, you know the first question they are going to ask you is… “What is your serial number?”. The serial number is easy to find on most of their products because they allow you to access it through the software. This is typically a much better alternative to turning the device off to flip it over, remove the battery and squint to read the long string of letters and number in a size 4 font.
The only problem is that each device OS has a different location to find this serial number. This article explains how to find the serial number in your iPhone device. It will also work for the iPhone 3G since they use the same operating system. And it should also work the same for the iPod Touch.
- From the main screen on your iPhone/iPod Touch, tap the “Settings” icon.
- On the Settings screen, tap the General section.
- Now tap the About section.
- Scroll down a ways and you will see an item for “Serial Number”. That’s it, read that off to the support person and you’ll be on your way.

if you didn’t pre-install any tracking app like iHound or register with MobileMe, then the only thing you can do is call your local Apple hotline (it varies depending on your area, but the best way to find your local helpline is by googling it. i.e. singapore apple service centre) and report your gadgets serial no as lost.
they will probably disable the device (if its an iPhone) or withhold the item and return it only if the thief decides to service it at an authorized Apple retail outlet. But seeing that its stolen goods, i don’t think it’ll ever end up there.
some people have reported being able to claim insurance money (idk how) and used that couple bucks to subsidise their next iPhone/Touch. Then most of them spend a couple bucks and invest in a tracking app. mobileme has a few interesting success cases (where a group of people chase down and confront the thief and get their device back, or some offer rewards for the return of their device), but many more have ended in some form of violence (getting beaten up by a bunch of punks etc.) instead.
moral of the story: take better care of your device. if you paid a bomb to get hold of it then have more responsibility over it. if its a theft case, well, lets hope karma does something. theres nothing much you can do, except maybe paste a bunch of reward posters around the area and hope for the best.

I had my iPod Touch stolen at school. I reported a theft, and looked everywhere for it. I am about to go on vacation for a month and will really be missing it, especially because I bought a new Speck Candyshell Aquaberry case for it 2 weeks earlier, and it was $32. I want to tell everyone that no matter the circumstances, if your teacher tells you that you can bring your iPod for the day, don’t do it. Bad things happen. I blame myself for it being stolen in the first place, but who would be so cold-hearted as taking a 6th grader’s iPod Touch. It is an awful thing to do. I would like to know more ways to find it without having a tracking app.
